The REEF Field Station of Northwest Florida (REEFNWFL)
was founded in January 1999 by Danielle Dowdy and
Greg Bunch. Since then,
two fish identification classes have already been conducted,
signing up a total of 34 new members to REEF. The first class was
held at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, including
marine biology students and local divers. The second class was
held at the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans, and its
participants consisted of aquarium staff, volunteers, and divers.
Our next endeavor involved bringing the Great American Fish Count
to Pensacola for the first time July 10th and 11th of 1999 and
making it a home here in the Panhandle. With all of our local
sponsors and the participation of the community, the GAFC proved
a big success, laying groundwork for an even more extensive
surveying experience for the next year.
